i held off on writing this post for a little while – about a month – but i need to express my immense, spluttering gratitude to the Ontario Arts Council. they recently awarded me a Writers’ Works in Progress grant for a non-fiction manuscript i sent to them in October.

this was (and still is) really big news for me, for a few reasons. i’ve so enjoyed writing non-fiction, but i had never really considered it an avenue for myself as a writer. that’s kind of the problem with slotting yourself into a genre throughout writing school – sometimes it’s hard to shake off that genre and take up other ones. this has verified – for me – that my work is worthwhile, and that is a lovely feeling.

the money is to be spent on writing. what an odd feeling to have – money to spend on taking time to oneself, on writing, and finishing a manuscript. it feels almost self-indulgent, an alien feeling, but a good one. i really loved writing the manuscript before this, but now i feel like this grant is like a horse moving from a canter into a full gallop – i have momentum.

so thanks be to the OAC for making a writer’s month – nay, year.
